Danish crime drama Terribly Happy won the main prize at the 43rd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which closed over the weekend. The film is based on a novel by Erling Jepsen.
The festival jury gave the special prize and $20,000 to Nan T. Achnas for The Photograph, while Alexey Uchitel was honored as best director for The Captive.
Two Czech actors – Martha Issova and Jiri Madl – picked up the acting prizes for their performances in Night Owl, a drama that deals with misdirected lives in the Karlin district in Prague.
Christopher Lee, in attendance this year, picked up the President’s Award. Other stars at the fest included actors Danny Glover and Armin Mueller-Stahl, and four film industry veterans who received Crystal Globes for their contribution to world cinema: actor Robert De Niro, Czech director Ivan Passer, Slovak actor Dusan Hanak and Slovak director Juraj Jakubisko.
This year’s Karlovy Vary festival featured 235 films from 57 countries and drew more than 9,000 film enthusiasts to the event.
